Fiction Writing for Young Adults start date delayed 1 week

We are postponing the first day of class for Fiction Writing for Young Adults, grades 9-12, for 1 week, until next Tuesday, March 27, in order to give more students a chance to sign up and avoid cancelling the class. Call for women artists for March exhibit: “Women’s Work”

The Ashtabula Arts Center is accepting art by women artists throughout the area in celebration of Women’s History Month for our juried March exhibit, “Women’s Work.” In an initiative led by Mary Urbas of the Gallery at Lakeland, multiple galleries in the Northeast Ohio area are celebrating the work of women artists. There will be a reception, free and open to the public, on Friday, March 16, from 6-8 p.m. The application is available through the link below, and at the Arts Center’s front desk. Auditions for “Ghost” January 17-18

Auditions for the G.B. Community Theatre production of Ghost, directed by Lynne Montgomery, will be held Wednesday, January 17 & Thursday, January 18 at the Ashtabula Arts Center from 6:30-8 p.m.

Please come prepared to read from the script and with a short song, as well as a complete list of calendar conflicts for the director — commitment is important! Anyone is welcome to audition, and we also always need volunteers willing to work backstage, in concessions, as ushers, and more.

Try a dance class for free! From 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, our Director of Dance Shelagh Dubsky will offer a sample beginning-level ballet class. If your son or daughter is interested in dance, but would like to try a class before committing to an eight-week session, this sample class is for them. Call (440) 964-3396 to sign up. Students should wear clothes that are comfortable to move in and thick socks. (Ballet slippers are not required for this class.)

“Classical Christmas” concert at Arts Center on December 22

Elenora Pertz & Marie Engle

The Ashtabula Arts Center will be presenting Classical Christmas: an Evening of Art Songs and Christmas Classics on Friday, December 22 at 7:30 p.m. This special holiday concert will feature pianist Elenora Pertz and mezzo-soprano Marie Engle performing music by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Aaron Copland, and Henri Duparc, as well as some Christmas favorites. Elenora Pertz was raised in Ashtabula. She studied and performed at the Ashtabula Arts Center, and was a piano student of Mary Redmond. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance & European Studies from Vanderbilt University, and now studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin.

Marie Engle of Wauseon, OH is a Master of Music candidate at the Juilliard School, where she studies with Marlena Malas. She lived in Vienna, Austria and performed with the award-winning Arnold Schönberg Choir at the Lincoln Center, as well as in Barcelona, Austria, and Hong Kong. Marie has a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University.

Announcing “Junie B. Jones, Jr.” for Youth Theatre Production Class show

We’re excited to announce that Junie B. Jones, Jr. will be our Youth Theatre Production this winter. Youth Theatre Production Class is open to students ages 5-17. Call (440) 964-3396 to register.

Auditions: Wednesday, January 10, from 6-8 p.m.
Rehearsals/Classes: Mondays & Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., plus some Saturday rehearsals (TBA). Class begins January 15, and runs 8 weeks, plus daily tech week rehearsals at 6 p.m., March 12-15.
Performance Dates: March 16-18 & 22-25, Thursday, Friday, & Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.

$120 class fee (or $108 for donors) — costumes are included in the fee. Financial aid is available for eligible students — download an application online.

Each child who enrolls in this class will receive a role and learn all about acting in a theatrical musical production. Attendance at all classes/rehearsals and at all performances is mandatory. Auditions are first come, first served, and are held to let children experience the entire process of participating in a show, as well as to give the director an idea of a child’s level of ability at the beginning of the class.
