Donald Johnson was born and raised in Ashtabula. He served as superintendent of the Union Dock from the 1950s until his death in 1973. He lived for many years on Allen Avenue with his wife, Bernice, and daughter, Carol. He took up painting late in life and was self-taught. It was a hobby he loved, and spent many evenings in his basement studio with his easel and paints.
