Visual Arts Classes for Kids

The Visual Arts Department encourages creative stimulation and thought while providing an opportunity to experience the joy and satisfaction of creating works of art. A wide variety of visual arts classes and workshops are offered for students of all ages, including pottery, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, knitting, and more. Individual instruction is available and outreach programming can also be arranged.

There will be an extra $5 fee for visual arts class/workshop registrations made within 24 hrs of the class beginning. Please register as early as possible so instructors can make sure they have enough materials purchased and prepared. Last-minute registration can result in a shortage of materials for students.

Little ones will have fun while developing the fine & gross motor skills essential for starting school. Children must be accompanied by parent/guardian at all classes. Adults attend free. Dress for a mess!

Elements of Art for Homeschoolers
for grades 1 & up

Learn basic art concepts such as color theory, drawing, painting, & mixed media. Students will be exposed to examples from art history and will develop an expanded visual vocabulary, learning about techniques and materials used in a traditional classroom setting.

Homeschool Clay

maximum of 6 students
Learn the basics of handbuilding and glazing, including materials and clay tools. Handbuilding is as simple as using your hands to form an object, using three main techniques and forming methods: pinching, coiling, and slab building. Once you’ve mastered those, you can make almost anything out of clay!

As a start to a lifelong love of music, children will sing songs, play musical games, and more aswe develop listening, social, and pre-reading skills.

Preschool Art Appreciation with Nancy Nelson-Brotz

Children will explore the tools and materials used in making art, learning to make connections between their projects and stories, ideas, and the seasons. We’ll create with paint, paper, scissors, glue, and more, learning about the proper care and use of materials. Dress for a mess!

Preschool Drama with Sarah Oberstar
11:10-11 a.m.
This class focuses on using movement and imagination, and working with others. We’ll create and tell stories as we explore the world of acting.

Wizard Art Camp
for grades 1-6

Get sorted into your houses, create your wands, and get ready for all manner of magical classes and imaginitive projects! Earn (or lose) points for the House Cup! Campers should bring a white t-shirt, pillowcase, or socks (100% cotton is best) to tie dye with their house colors on Thursday. Please bring a snack and water every day, and dress for a mess!

Circus Art Camp
for grades 1 & up

We will make circus tents, carousels, and even make our own stickers to put inside the tent. We’ll learn how to do a balancing act and walk a “tight rope” (ribbon on the ground,) and hula hoop. We will even be decorating the hula hoops with colorful tape and stickers to personalize them and bring home for continued fun! These activities are meant to be fun and playful, but also encourage creativity, individuality, teamwork, and exercise.

Trash-to-Treasure Upcycling
Art Camp
for grades 1 & up

Upcycled art is a creative, out-of-the-box way to use materials and objects that might otherwise have ended up in a landfill. In this camp, students will use everyday items to bind books, collage, make picture frames, and more!

Multi-Arts Camp: It’s A Jungle Out There!
for grades 1-6
Monday-Friday, June 24-July 12
(no camp on July 4)

Limit of 20 students
Kids will learn music, choreography, and acting roles for the production of It’s a Jungle Out There!, and will create their own colorful costumes, props, and set pieces, too! Multi-Arts Camp culminates with a presentation of the show for family and friends in Straw Hat Theatre on Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m. First-time participants are welcome – no artistic or theatrical experience needed! Summer Multi-Arts Camp is a great way for kids to try new activities, make new friends, and use minds, bodies, and voices to create something special. All campers should bring packed lunches!

Extra Messy Preschool Art Camp

We’ll be painting with splat balls, frozen paint, sidewalk paint, and more! This will be a process-based camp with lots of messy experimentation. Students should bring a white, 100% cotton t-shirt for ice dyeing (please write the student’s name on the tag.)

This camp balances technical instruction with freedom of self-expression. Students learn to embrace their curiosity and individuality as they develop artistic skill. Learn to take you artistic skills to the next level as you spend four hours each day creating art.
