In the midst of the Great Depression, Scout and her brother Jem live in a small town in Alabama with their widowed father, a lawyer named Atticus Finch. When Atticus takes up the defense of Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape by a white woman, the facade of their seemingly idyllic town begins to crack, spilling violence and bigotry through the community. As Scout and Jem face ridicule from their classmates and find an escape in their interactions with their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, Atticus remains committed to seeing justice done and teaching his children to have the courage and compassion to fight for what’s right.
