SUMMARY:Poetry Out Loud Intro Meeting/Q & A
DESCRIPTION:September 30\, 6 p.m.\nopen to high school students \nPoetry Out Loud fosters community and connection by uniting students\, educators\, and organizations through the shared experience of celebrating poetry. With access to the Poetry Out Loud anthology of more than 1\,200 classic and contemporary poems\, students lift poetry off the page and explore themes that deepen their understanding of literary history\, contemporary life\, and their own lived experience. \nThrough the process of memorizing and reciting these poems\, students are provided with the opportunity to nurture an appreciation for this artform while developing vital skills for personal and professional growth\, such as public speaking. Poetry Out Loud resources\, including lesson plans\, recitation tips\, and the poem anthology\, are all available for free on the PoetryOutLoud.org website\, making the significant impact of this program accessible to students and educators across the nation. \nStudents who participate in Poetry Out Loud may take part in classroom and school competitions\, with finalists advancing to state competitions and ultimately to the national finals\, where students from 55 states and jurisdictions compete for the grand prize of $20\,000. Students may also engage through non-school organizations\, such as after school clubs\, libraries\, and nonprofit organizations that also host Poetry Out Loud\, and allow for advancement to state competitions. In total\, Poetry Out Loud annually awards more than $100\,000 to state- and national-level winners and their schools. \nAwards:\nNational Level:  A total of $50\,000 in awards and school/organizational stipends will be given at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals\, including a $20\,000 award for the National Champion\, $10\,000 for 2nd place\, $5\,000 for 3rd place\, and $1\,000 for 4th-9th places. The representing schools/organizations of each of the top nine finalists receive $500 for the purchase of poetry materials. There will be one honorable mention in each of the three national semifinals competitions. Those students will not advance to the finals\, but will each receive a $1\,000 cash award and a $500 school/organizational stipend. \nState Level: Each winner at the state level will receive $200. The state winner’s school/organization will receive $500 for poetry materials. One runner-up in each state will receive $100; their school/organization will receive $200 for the purchase of poetry materials. \nThe Poetry Foundation provides and administers all aspects of the monetary prizes awarded for Poetry Out Loud.
