Currently on display in our gallery is “Hope in Artistry: Reducing Stigma and Raising Awareness for Suicide Prevention,” presented by the Ashtabula County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Ashtabula County LOSS Team, in collaboration with the Ashtabula Arts Center. This juried exhibit features a variety of mediums submitted by artists from across Ashtabula County, and the purpose of the exhibit is to reduce stigma, raise awareness for suicide prevention, and commemorate National Survivors of Suicide Day (November 18, 2017). There will be a reception, free and open to the public, on Friday, December 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the Arts Center gallery.
“In each of the last two years, Ashtabula County has lost 18 individuals to suicide. That puts us well over both the state and national suicide rates. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death across all demographic categories, but especially among younger and older Ashtabula County residents. We know that those friends and loved ones who are left behind after a suicide loss are placed at a greatly elevated risk of dying by suicide themselves and are in need of awareness, intervention, and support. Hope in Artistry: Reducing Stigma and Raising Awareness for Suicide Prevention will offer an artistic outlet for survivors and community artists to show support for survivors, raise awareness, and start conversations about suicide loss and prevention.” –exhibit coordinator Bridget Sherman
The Ashtabula Arts Center gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon, as well as before performances and during intermission. Admission to the gallery is free.
