Call for artists by Ashtabula County Suicide Prevention Coalition/Ashtabula County LOSS

The Ashtabula County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Ashtabula County LOSS Team, in collaboration with the Ashtabula Arts Center, are seeking artwork submissions for an inaugural show, “Hope in Artistry: Reducing Stigma and Raising Awareness for Suicide Prevention.” A variety of mediums will be accepted, including photography, painting, illustrations and mixed media. This is a great opportunity for artists in Ashtabula County and Northeast Ohio to show your work, supportsurvivors of suicide, reduce stigma, and raise awareness to help prevent suicide. In each of the last two years, Ashtabula County has lost 18 individuals to suicide. That puts us well over both the state and national suicide rates. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death across all demographic categories, but especially among younger and older Ashtabula County residents. We know that those friends and loved ones who are left behind after a suicide loss are placed at a greatly elevated risk of dying by suicide themselves and are in need of awareness, intervention, and support. “Hope in Artistry: Reducing Stigma and Raising Awareness for Suicide Prevention” will offer an artistic outlet for survivors and community artists to show support for survivors, raise awareness, and start conversations about suicide loss and prevention.

This will be a juried exhibit of artwork to reduce stigma, raise awareness for suicide prevention, and commemorate National Survivors of Suicide Day (November 18, 2017). Both two and three-dimensional work is eligible. Open to all artists who reside in Ashtabula County (artwork from residents outside of Ashtabula County will be considered on a case by case basis). If your work is chosen, you will be invited to attend the opening reception on November 17, 2017 at the Ashtabula Arts Center from 6-8 pm.

To apply, complete the entry form and waiver (available at the Ashtabula Arts Center front desk), and submit artwork to Ashtabula Arts Center on November 1 & 2, 2017. Artists will be notified of their acceptance between November 3rd and November 6th, 2017. If accepted, artwork will be displayed at the Ashtabula Arts Center during the month of November, with pick-up and take-down November 30th through December 1st, 2017. Artists are responsible for the delivery, pack, transport, and provide for the return of their submitted artwork at their own risk and expense. Please see the release and waiver for more details.
